PAPS
Project Area: 60 sq.m.
Project Year: 2021
Location: Arnavutköy, İstanbul
Located in Arnavutköy, this old barn house was converted into a boutique coffee shop. Simple and raw materials were used on the exterior of PAPS to maintain a visual and aesthetic connection between the surrounding buildings and the PAPS. Wooden block coffee tables and bare concrete benches are perfect matches for the brick walls and the cobblestone road.
Metal planters were designed for existing niches to soften the heavy effect of brick walls. The building is divided into two areas, the bar area with a painted concrete ceiling and a seating area with a barrel-vaulted high ceiling. To showcase the unique coffee blends of the PAPS, we designed a wall-like brick structure to highlight the bar area and create a more spacious effect in this small area.
In the bar area of the PAPS, we wanted to go along with a mixture of modern look in the original building, which has characteristics of its local heritage, to create visual contrast in an architectural style. Separating the brewing process and creating a new texture in the space with new white brick walls makes the bar the focal point of the interior. To have a spacious feeling in this low ceiling part of the interior, we used stools instead of chairs, which you can see a lot in the Turkish coffee culture.
